FOUR teams are eyeing the two remaining Malaysia Cup quarter-final berths in the final round of group matches today.

While Terengganu only need a point when they host Sarawak at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Terengganu in Group A, Negri Sembilan, Kelantan and Police will be left fighting for the remaining spot.

Police, at least, have their destiny in their own hands when they travel to Kota Kinabalu to take on Sabah as a win would take them through as one of the two best third-placed teams from Group B irrespective of other results.

Negri Sembilan and Kelantan face off in Paroi with both teams needing to win their Group A encounter and hope that Police falter at the Likas Stadium.

But Negri do have one last chance at salvation should they fail to do the job on the field as their appeal against a three-point deduction for failing to field an Under-23 player in their match against Selangor on June 27 is still pending with the FA of Malaysia.
Negri, with 13 points, are fourth in Group A and trail Terengganu (16) and Kelantan (14) and the mathematics involved mean only the top two teams can progress from this group if Police win their match.

Police are third in Group B on 15 points and could still snatch second spot from Kedah on better goal difference if results go their way.

Selangor, Johor FC, Kedah, UPB FC-MyTeam, Perlis and Perak have all reached the last eight, rendering their final group matches academic.

THE failure of the FAM competitions committee to decide how many teams will play in the Malaysian Super League (MSL) next season has left teams facing relegation and promotion in limbo.

The competitions committee has yet to decide if the MSL will have 13 or 14 teams. There are presently 13 teams playing in the MSL.

Police, Penang and Sarawak are facing relegation, while KL Plus and Kuala Muda Naza are looking at promotion to the MSL.

The Kelantan FA has requested that FAM consider a third team from the Premier League to be promoted.

“We are not very sure of the format right now. There is talk of 14 teams playing in the MSL next season.

“FAM should be deciding on this very soon,” said one state FA secretary, who did not want to be identified.

Penang, who started the season very poorly, have finally found their feet and beat Terengganu 4-2 at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Saturday.

The win saw Penang move up one place to 12th with 16 points in the 13-team league.

Sarawak, winless in their last nine matches and 4-1 losers to Selangor on Saturday, are now bottom with 14 points.

With just two matches remaining, Sarawak are prime candidates for relegation.

Police, who are also battling relegation, scored a surprise 2-1 home win over newly crowned champions Kedah at the Selayang Stadium.

However, Police, who are now in 11th in the table with 18 points, are still not safe as they still must play Penang and Sarawak.

KOTA BHARU Jan 6 – Three former Thai internationals may don Kelantan colours for the state’s Premier One challenge this season, says Kelantan FA president Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Daud.

He said last year’s signing Worawoot Srimaka who has agreed for an extension of his contract would be recommending another two ex-internationals for trials here.

“They would go through the trial to determine their physical and mental conditions as we do not want to just sign anybody without trying them out,” he told Bernama Tuesday.

Wan Hashim said the FA would not rush into making a decision on the foreign and local players. The state team had identified 24 players including those from the President’s Cup squad.

After a poor campaign last year, about 90 percent of the players had “migrated” in search of greener pastures.

However, Kelantan coach Abdullah Ahmad is not losing any sleep about having to guide an inexperienced young team.

“In football, players joining other teams after a season is quite normal and we must proceed with what we have and place confidence in them,” he said.

KUANTAN Aug 24 – Kedah team manager Datuk Shukri Hashim has urged FAM to take action against the Kelantan FA (Kafa) for the crowd trouble during Saturday night’s Malaysia Cup match at Stadium Sultan Mohd IV in Kota Bharu.

“Kafa not only failed to control the indisciplined fans but some of its officials also fuelled their anger,” he said here Sunday.

Shukri also expressed concern that lax security at the stadium could jeopardise the safety of officials and players.

A section of the Kelantan fans started hurling objects and mineral water bottles onto the pitch after Kedah had taken a 2-1 lead in the second half.

Kelantan players also held up play for several minutes by protesting against Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli’s goal in the 57th minute, claiming he was offside.

Some Kelantan fans then invaded the field when the referee expelled a Kelantan player. Kedah won the match 2-1.

However, Shukri praised Kedah players for keeping their cool in the face of rough play by Kelantan players in the second half.

He said several Kedah players sustained light injuries in the match.

KOTA BHARU Aug 24 – Kelantan FA President Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Daud said today the referee and linesman were responsible for the pitch invasion during the Kelantan-Kedah Malaysia Cup A match last night at the Stadium Sultan Mohamed IV.

The spectators should not be blamed for turning aggressive instead referee Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh and linesman P.Sundra Singran should be held responsible over the incident which also involved damage to the Kedah’s players’ bus.

“If the quality of refereeing was not as bad like the one last night there will be no reason for the spectators to turn violent and run riot. This is not our fault or that of the spectators but due to the refereeing as a whole,” he told reporters.

In the match Kedah were leading 1-1 when Zool Ihsan Yunus scored the second goal for Kedah in the 67th minute. However at least three Kelantan players led by Adamec Martin claimed the scorer was offside. When Admec protested to the referee he was shown the red card to leave the pitch.

Subkhiddin allowed the goal because the linesman had not raised the flag for offside.

Then all hell broke loose as the spectators scaled the fencing and invaded the pitch to beat up Sundra Singran while others approached Subkhiddin.

Play resumed after 16 minutes and one of the protestors was arrested by police for trying to assault the linesman.

PETALING JAYA Nov 25 – The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) may introduce a clause to penalise state FAs who fail to pay their players on time.

However, this proposal is subject to agreement by the FAM Exco, who will meet next January.

“This matter was raised by the Players’ Status Committee because there are still state associations which have failed to put their act together on such matters,” FAM secretary Datuk Dell Akbar told reporters after the committee’s meeting at Wisma FAM here today.

Dell said this was among suggestions to overcome the problem of delays in salary payments and abuse of regulations on termination of players’ contracts.

“If the Exco feel it is necessary to have this clause, FAM may implement it,” he said.

At the meeting, the committee discussed complaints by several Perak and Kelantan players about the delay in their salary payments.

The committee was only satisfied with the explanation given on the case of Nigerian import Nduka Ugabad of Perak.

Dell said the Perak FA (PFA) clarified that three matters had to be settled before Nduka’s October salary could be paid.

The first was that his income tax problems had to be sorted out and the second, his telephone bill of RM4,000 should be settled, Dell said.

“PFA also want to make sure that the player’s house is still in fully furnished condition before he leaves Perak, and if these three matters are settled, PFA will make the payment…this is a normal process,” he said.

In the case of five Kelantan players, FAM have decided to pay them.

FAM will pay Nazreen Tee Abdullah’s and S.Sivaram’s salaries for December 2001, which have not been paid by the Kelantan FA.

“FAM will settle the two players’ salaries of RM2,275 each and Tengku Hazman Raja Hassan’s salary for October to Decemeber 2000 totalling RM3,750,” he said.

FAM will also pay half of Mohd Noor Derus’ and Tuan Kamree Tuan Yahya’s salary arrears and the balance will be settled by the KFA.

Mohd Noor’s salary arrear is for June to December 2002 period while that of Tuan Kamree is for May to June 2002.
