MADRID : Real Madrid will borrow 70 million euros (90 million dollars) from Spain’s largest bank Santander to help finance the purchase of Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, Spanish radio said Wednesday.

But the loan will not be enough to cover the transfer fee, private radio Cadena Ser said.

“Cristiano Ronaldo already has an agreement with Manchester to leave for Real at the end of the season for a reasonable sum,” the radio said, without indicating its sources.

Spanish sports media have said for several weeks that the 23-year-old was set for a move to the Spanish champions, despite repeated denials.

Real tracked Ronaldo all of last summer following his Champions League and English Premier League triumphs with the English club before United boss Sir Alex Ferguson stepped in and emphatically vetoed his departure.

But the AS daily, a newspaper close to Real, said last month that Ronaldo will join the club in the summer for 85 million euros (110 million dollars) under a secret pact made between then Real president Ramon Calderon, the player and his agent Jorge Mendes.

After picking up the 2008 FIFA World Footballer of the Year award last month, Ronaldo told Spanish public television station TVE that he was learning Spanish, a comment that further fuelled speculation over a possible move.

MANCHESTER, England – Manchester United went five points clear at the top of the English Premier League with a 1-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford here Saturday.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-half penalty secured victory in a match where United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar set a new English league record for most minutes without conceding a goal.

The 38-year-old Dutchman, who has now not conceded a goal in domestic league action to 1,121 minutes – more than 18-and-a-half hours – broke the record 17 minutes from time on his way to a 12th straight clean sheet.

Victory also piled the pressure on English, European and world championsUnited’s nearest domestic pursuers, Chelsea and Liverpool, who meet at Anfield on Sunday.

Though United never scaled the attacking heights they reached in Tuesday’s 5-0 demolition of West Browmich Albion, they comfortably held Everton at bay and had little trouble ending the visitors’ run of nine matches without defeat.

In pursuit of the record, van der Sar suffered few, if any, anxious moments during a one-sided first half, with the champions dominating possession throughout and regularly forcing Tim Howard into action.

First to test the United goalkeeper was Park Ji-Sung, his teasing right wing cross after seven minutes requiring Howard to scramble across the six yard box and push the ball away to safety as Ronaldo loomed large.

Next up was the lively Carlos Tevez, who thought he had scored in the 12th minutes but, somehow, former United keeper Howard managed to stick out an arm after the Argentinean forward had instinctively got a shot away from inside the penalty area.

World Player of the Year Ronaldo then toe-poked an effort against the post, and forced a routine parry from Howard with another long range drive.

It seemed Everton had weathered the storm and the visitors began to pass the ball nicely, Steven Pienaar and Leighton Baines particularly catching the eye as they caused Gary Neville no end of trouble.

Frustratingly for David Moyes, Everton’s manager, there was no real cutting edge but they looked certain to head into the break on level terms until an aberration from Mikel Arteta undid alll their hard work.

When Michael Carrick skipped forward, he appeared to be heading down a blind alley but, for some reason, Arteta stuck out his trailing leg, clipped the midfielder and referee Mark Halsey was left with option but to point to the penalty spot.

It brought back memories of the teams’ Old Trafford meeting in December 2007 – Pienaar tripped Ryan Giggs that afternoon – and as was the case then, Ronaldo ensured Everton suffered maximum punishment by beating Howard from 12 yards.

And the game could have been ended as a contest had Halsey awarded another penalty when Carrick tumbled over Joleon Lescott’s outstretched leg.

Again, however, Halsey made the correct decision, waving away United claims.

Other than the odd free-kick from Arteta, which van der Sar comfortably gathered, Everton never looked like scoring let alone bringing their search for a first win on this ground since August 1992 to a successful conclusion.

Goalmouth action was scarce in the dying moments – the closest anyone came to scoring was when Arteta had a drive blocked by Carrick – but Everton had claims for a penalty of their own when Lescott seemed to be wrestled to the floor by Rio Ferdinand.

But it was not to be and van der Sar etched his name in the record books with the minimum of fuss.

LONDON: Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to break the 20-goal barrier for a third successive season.

The Portuguese star, who racked up 42 last time round as United romped to a Premier League and Champions League double, has 13 to his name so far.

“People are saying Cristiano has not had a good season but he has got 13 goals and 11 assists,” said Ferguson.

“If you dismiss last season altogether they would be saying it is incredible for a winger to score 13 at this stage. I am absolutely certain he will end up with over 20 again.”

Ferguson added that it was impossible for Ronaldo, now one of the most heavily-marked players in the Premier League, to repeat his “miracle season” of 2007/2008 when he was also named world player of the year.

“It’s hard to replicate a season like that but I am not sure that Cristiano understood it was a miracle season,” said the United manager.

“He had the belief it was normal for him and I think he just expected to carry on. But one of the situations he had to face was that this year couldn’t be as good as last season.

“Now he has started to come to terms with the whole thing, we will see more goals from him.”

Ronaldo suffered an ankle injury at the start of the season and was at the centre of a long-running controversy caused by Real Madrid’s attentions.

ZURICH: Manchester United and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo was on Monday named FIFA World Footballer of the Year for 2008.

Ronaldo, who is also holder of the prestigious Ballon d’Or for the European Footballer of the Year, beat off competition from 2007 winner Kaka (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Fernando Torres (Spain) and Xavi (Spain).

“It’s an overwhelming moment in my career and I’d like to dedicate this award to my family, friends and colleagues,” he said.

Ronaldo went out of his way to heap praise on United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with whom relations became strained during last summer over whether he was going to leave the club for Real Madrid.

“It’s also true that the manager always has an important role to play,” said Ronaldo.

“It was a great season for me and for my club, and the coach was important for me because I learned a lot from him.

“His experience over so many years is of paramount importance – it’s a privilege to have such a great club manager.

“This is the climax of a fantastic era for me. I’m happy and proud about what has been done by my team and what we have won.

“I am lucky to be part of the history of a club like Manchester United.”

The 23-year-old, scorer of 42 goals in all competitions in the 2007-8 season, was one of United’s architects behind the club’s English Premiership and Champions League double.

It was not a perfectly scripted year for Ronaldo, however, as Portugal crashed out 3-2 to Germany in the quarter-final of Euro 2008 in June.

Ronaldo becomes the second Portuguese player to win the FIFA accolade after Luis Figo in 2001, and the first one playing for a British club.

He reaped 935 points in the vote in which the coaches and captains of 155 national teams took part. Messi finished second (678 points) and was trailed by Torres (203), Kaka (183) and Xavi (155).

Brazilian midfielder Marta was unveiled as FIFA World Women’s Footballer of the year for 2008, for the third year running.

Marta delivered an outstanding performance at the women’s Olympic football tournament in Beijing 2008, and equalled the record set by Birgit Prinz by claiming her third consecutive title.

For the women’s vote, 139 coaches and captains cast their vote and Marta won comfortably (1,002 points) ahead of Germany’s Prinz (328), Brazil’s Cristiane (275), Germany’s Nadine Angerer (198) and England’s Kelly Smith (150). – AFP/de
