SINGAPORE: The Super Reds went to the top of the NTUC Income-Yeo’s S.League 2008 table on Friday night, and they didn’t even have to move out of first gear to despatch Dalian Shide 3-0 at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday night.

The Koreans are on 53 points, one ahead of SAFFC. The two sides meet on Monday at the Warriors’ Choa Chu Kang Stadium for the second leg of their RHB Singapore Cup quarter-final tie.

With one eye on Monday’s match, coach Jeon Kyeong Joon decided to rest a couple of his regular starting XI, defender Park Mun Ki and midfielder Choi Wan Geon.

And after goals from midfielder Seo Su Jong on 19 minutes, and mid-season signing striker Park Kang Jin in the 33rd and 50th minutes, Jeon was comfortable enough to rest three more of starters, including team top scorer Oh Ddog Yi and goal scorer Seo.

Park Kang Jin nearly completed his hat-trick when he stepped up to take a penalty in injury time, but he somehow hit the post.

“We used this match to try out our plan for Monday’s match and tried improving it over the course of the game,” said Jeon.

“By the second half, we had pretty much perfected it.”

“SAFFC are a very strong team and they will do well, but if we knock them out of the Cup on Monday, it will be hard for them when we next meet on Aug 30.”

SINGAPORE: League leaders SAFFC’s advantage at the top of the NTUC Income-Yeo’s S.League 2008 could be reduced to a point on Tuesday, after Gombak United held them to a 1-1 draw at Choa Chu Kang Stadium on Monday.

Home United, who visit bottom club Balestier Khalsa on Tuesday night, beat SAFFC 2-1 on Friday to close the gap to four points.

The Warriors struggled to carve out chances in the first half, managing only to get a shot on target in the 44th minute.

But Gombak’s dogged resistance finally broke down in the 51st minute, when Ahmad Latiff was hauled down in the box.

Aleksandar Duric scored from the penalty spot to chalk up his 243rd career goal in all domestic competitions, just one shy of equalling Mirko Grabovac’s record.

But it was the Bulls who showed more purpose after that, and they were rewarded in the 69th minute when Kingsley Njoku connected with Ruhaizad Ismail’s cross to fire home from close range.

In another match, Geylang United beat Sengkang Punggol 2-1. –

SINGAPORE: Sengkang Punggol held Woodlands Wellington to a goal-less draw in an S.League match at Hougang Stadium on Tuesday.

The scoreline reflects the last time the two sides met three months ago where they also played out to a goal-less draw at Woodlands Stadium.

Sengkang remains entrenched at the bottom of the S.League table with 10 points, having only won one match and drew seven so far.

Much as Woodlands would have like to close the gap, they remain top fifth – behind SAFFC, Super Reds, Home and Tampines. – CNA/de
