Final Chance To Seal Quarter-Final Places

Posted on: August 2, 2008

FOUR teams are eyeing the two remaining Malaysia Cup quarter-final berths in the final round of group matches today.

While Terengganu only need a point when they host Sarawak at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Terengganu in Group A, Negri Sembilan, Kelantan and Police will be left fighting for the remaining spot.

Police, at least, have their destiny in their own hands when they travel to Kota Kinabalu to take on Sabah as a win would take them through as one of the two best third-placed teams from Group B irrespective of other results.

Negri Sembilan and Kelantan face off in Paroi with both teams needing to win their Group A encounter and hope that Police falter at the Likas Stadium.

But Negri do have one last chance at salvation should they fail to do the job on the field as their appeal against a three-point deduction for failing to field an Under-23 player in their match against Selangor on June 27 is still pending with the FA of Malaysia.
Negri, with 13 points, are fourth in Group A and trail Terengganu (16) and Kelantan (14) and the mathematics involved mean only the top two teams can progress from this group if Police win their match.

Police are third in Group B on 15 points and could still snatch second spot from Kedah on better goal difference if results go their way.

Selangor, Johor FC, Kedah, UPB FC-MyTeam, Perlis and Perak have all reached the last eight, rendering their final group matches academic.
