Foot Buzz : Torres Out Again

Posted on: November 29, 2008

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury and faces at least another two weeks on the sidelines.

The 24-year-old Spaniard had only started three matches since returning from a three-week layoff after being injured on World Cup qualifying duty last month.

He played the full 90 minutes of Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Marseille in the Champions League, but didn’t come close to scoring his first Liverpool goal since Oct 5.

“Fernando has a strain in his right hamstring and will be out of action for between two and three weeks,” Liverpool said on Thursday.

Another blow for Benitez on Thursday was defender Fabio Aurelio being ruled out for two weeks with a calf strain.
Devils want world crown

MANCHESTER: Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson pledged on Thursday to take his strongest possible squad to Japan in a bid to win the World Club Cup for the first time.

As European Champions League winners, United have been given a bye into the semi-finals of the seven-team tournament which takes place from Dec 11-21.

“We feel we should have won more in Europe. We won the Intercontinental Cup in back in 1999 and as the first British club to do that it was a prestigious piece of history for us,” Ferguson told reporters. “To win this would be even better.”

Ipswich’s Norris fined

LONDON: Ipswich Town midfielder David Norris was fined STG5,000 (RM27,800) by the Football Association here on Thursday following his controversial goal celebration in the win over Blackpool earlier this month.

Norris had already been fined by his club for making a ‘handcuff’ gesture in support of his jailed former Plymouth teammate Luke McCormick after scoring in Ipswich’s 1-0 victory away to Blackpool on Nov 8.

The 27-year-old Norris, who admitted a charge of improper conduct, was also warned as to his future behaviour. — AFP

Man City eyeing Fabiano

MANCHESTER: Manchester City have inquired about Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano (pic).

City are preparing a STG20 million bid for Fabiano, who played alongside Robinho when Brazil beat Portugal 6-2 earlier this month.

Jose Fuentes, the player’s agent, said: “Manchester City have asked for Fabiano but they are not the only team, they are one of many.

“The final decision belongs to the board of Sevilla.”

Fabiano scored 24 goals for Sevilla last season — two were penalties — but his relationship with coach Manolo Jimenez is strained.

City are also eyeing Hibernian’s STG4 million-rated star striker Steven Fletcher.
